Hi Martin,
Thanks for contacting us. It's up to you really, we do offer some short 3 day courses that will allow you to get some base knowledge if you feel that's what you need. However, all our courses do start from the basics, and allow people that have no previous experience to take the courses, so it isn't strictly necessary to have any previous experience.
What follows below is some more information about the courses that might be helpful, take a look and please email me if you have any more questions, or would like to visit the studios.
We offer training in a couple of different formats. We have full-time and part-time courses that take place here in our London studios, and online courses that you can take remotely.
Our full-time classroom courses are designed to provide a student with no previous experience, with a level of skill that will allow them to enter the industry as a junior CG artist. All our 3D courses start with a complete foundation in CG art workflow called the Maya Core. This lasts for 6 weeks and covers all aspects of creating artwork and animations using Maya.
Introduction to Maya (principles, toolsets and pipeline overview)
Introduction to Animation and Rigging
Introduction to NURBS Modelling
Introduction to Polygon Modelling, UV Mapping and Skinning
Introduction to Texture Mapping
Introduction to Lighting and Rendering
(Our online Maya Core course covers exactly the same content)
Following completion of this first 6 weeks students move on to develop more specific skills for particular industry areas. The options are as follows;
Visual Effects
This course is concerned with all the skills and workflow required to successfully integrate 3D graphics into live-action footage. Students will create their own 3D work, and learn the processes of camera tracking, shot staging, advanced lighting and texturing and compositing to create their very own visual effects shot. Your final project will be suitable for your showreel and demonstrate your understanding of professional visual effects techniques.
Animation
Students on the animation course spend the entire second half of their course working on a short animation clip. A pre modelled and rigged character is provided to students, who are taught basic animation principles and the observational skills to develop as professional animators. Students complete with a piece of character animation, lip-synced to dialogue.
Characters
The characters course revolves around the process of creating character models, with good, realistic anatomy and professional modelling techniques. Students also build rigs for their characters to enable a realistic range of movement and muscle deformation.
Games
Our games course focuses upon all of the technical art skills required of a junior games artist in production. Students on this course work to a professional brief, often using photo reference to create models and environments (interiors and exteriors) to a standard necessary for a next generation game. Using existing games as a style guide for the work, students learn to model and texture their work to specification for real-time export using the Unreal game engine.
Compositing
In addition to the above 3D based courses, we also have a 2D compositing course. This does not include, or require completion of the Maya Core. Compositing is the process of layering together multiple images from different sources (i.e. live-action, backplates and multi-pass CG renders) into a seamless final shot or sequence. The course teaches image and colour theory, the processes of keying, matte generation, rotoscoping and full compositing techniques. Please note that our Compositing course is now using Nuke, the next generation compositing software, as well as Shake and PF-Track and Boujou for tracking and matchmove.
All of our 12 week courses are £8,500. The terms of enrolment for our courses are as follows; please complete the attached student registration form and place your £1,000 course booking deposit to reserve your course seat. Following this please complete payment of your remaining fees no later than 30 days before your course starts.
If you are a non EU passport holder then you may require a visa to attend a course here. If so, we are happy to supply standard letters of invitation for visa purposes once you have registered and paid your deposit. There is an additional £100 administration fee for visa letters that we only charge if you are unable to obtain a visa and we therefore have to return your course bookings deposit.
Our online courses are delivered via our online learning system as high definition streaming video tutorials. The courses are all cross-referenced with related videos explaining the use of the relevant software toolsets required to work through the creative tutorials, and supporting Maya and image files are supplied where necessary. The learning system also has a Q&A section allowing users to post questions to tutors and the support team and receive answers inside 24 hours (usually faster.)
We have online courses in the following;
Maya Core (6 modules, as listed above)
Camera Tracking
ZBrush Foundation
Visualisation with 3ds Max
If you would like to see how the online learning system works, and experience the quality of the material available, there is some free tutorial content available. To access this please create a user account and password here;
